History:
Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643 - 1704) was a French composer from the Baroque era.

This ?Trumpet Voluntary? is ?a Rondeau (a French baroque dance of that time).
He composed music of the best quality in several styles, including sacred music and
he was recognized and acknowledged by his contemporaries.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (the son of a master scribe who had good connections to influential families in
the Parliament of Paris) received a good education and registered for a law school in Paris when he was eighteen.
Then he was in Rome (most likely between 1667 and 1669) and studied with Giacomo Carissimi
(The most influential and prolific Italian composer of his time (1604 - 1674, in Rome).
The legend claims that Charpentier initially traveled to Rome to study painting
but then was discovered by Carissimi, but this story is undocumented.
In Italy Charpentier acquired a solid knowledge of the contemporary Italian practice of composing
and brought it with him to France upon his return.
Again in France, music historians believe he worked as the house composer for Marie de Lorraine,
duchesse de Guise, until her death in 1688.
During this time he composed a considerable quantity of dramatic secular vocal works, as well as
Psalms, hymns, a Magnificat setting, a mass, and motets which he called ?stories? and ?canticum?.

Around 1672, Charpentier worked with Jean-Baptist Poquelin, better known as ?Moli?re? (1622 - 1673),
the French theatre writer, director and actor and master of the comic satire.

During the 1680?s Charpentier served at the Jesuits? Paris church of St. Louis, France.
In addition he served as the music teacher to Louis-Philippe, Duke of Chartres.
Charpentier was appointed ?master of music? at? La Sainte Chapelle in 1698.
He held this position until his death in 1704.
