History:
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) wrote his ?Chorale: Sleepers, Wake? (BWV 140) in 1731.
It was originally called Chorale: Wachet auf uns die Stimme? in the German langue, and was originally scored for French horn, 2 Obo?s, and ?Taille? (a instrument similar to ?oboe da camera?), violino piccolo, violin, viola, basso continuo and choir with tenor and bass soloists.
If performed with singers, the text is based on ?the parable of the 10 Virgins? from ?Mathew 25: 1-3?.

However, it was the composer Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608) who originally wrote this melody line in this composition, and under the same name. J.S. Bach just ?borrowed? it for his own genius purposes, a process quite normal in those year, something we today are calling of ?stealing others creative work covered by copyrights?. But there were no copyrights in those years, so.....

This MELODY (Lutheran hymn) is still very popular today among people all over the world.
And those who don?t know it, will like it instantly when hearing it.

It was also common at the time of J. S. Bach, to use any musical instrument from any composition, if it would fit the instrument and performed with a fine player.
And most of J. S. Bach?s compositions for keyboard instrument was NEVER written for ?the piano?, a instrument not invented until much later. No, Bach wrote for ?the harpsichord? a instruments similar to the piano by its keyboard. So should pianist be forbidden to play Bach on the piano today? No... Today all pianists are playing Bach on piano, and with no public objection from professors of music.
The same ?change of instruments? can be done with this little nice piece of music, which I have arranged and written out for 3 trombones.
I am sure if Bach had known the potential of the trombones of today, he would have written a lot of music for trombone.
But at the time of Bach the trombone was not yet developed up the level of today and the modern technique performed by fine players. That?s why!
